Project Description

Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice have been an Enable2 customer for 4 Years. We spoke to Sarah Ramsden,  Community Nurse Specialist at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice to find out why interpreting is so important to their organisation.

Manorlands is a Sue Ryder hospice providing palliative and end of life care for the Wharfedale, Airedale and Craven areas. Services include, in patient care, day therapy, physio, occupational and complementary therapy as well as social care support and bereavement support.

The support Manorlands Hospice offers at the end of life and for non-curative illnesses means that some very sensitive conversations are taking place with referred patients from the community teams, GPs and also the hospitals.

When Sarah started working at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice 2 years ago, her first patient was Slovakian and a colleague gave her the contact details for Enable2. Sarah explains “A big part of our role is symptom management, so we need to be able to accurately assess patients and make changes to their medication if needed.  Clear communication is vital. The patient and their family need to fully understand those changes.”

Sarah goes on to explain “An interpreter is not just for the patients, but also for the families as well. Even in situations where you have a family member who can speak English, it’s not always appropriate to use that family member to interpret. Their understanding and emotions may cloud the messages that we need to get across so having a professional and understanding interpreter is so important.”

Manorlands hands

Enable2 supplies face to face interpreters for Manorlands Hospice in a range of languages, with particular emphasis on East European languages like Polish and Czech, on a pre booked and emergency basis. The majority of interpreting is centred on the palliative care of patients and assessments.

Working together Enable2 and Manorlands Hospice ensure that patients and their families have clear lines of communication about complex medical and care issues. Sarah says “We had an instance recently with a gentleman who had young children and there were a lot of complex challenges with dealing with him and his family. Without Enable2’s interpreting service, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we did, which was for him to die at home with his family, which was exactly what he wanted.”

“We have had nothing but good experiences with Enable2. Their interpreters are on time, reliable, professional and trustworthy. We are aware sometimes of the fact we are asking a lot of the interpreters but we feel confident in their ability to deliver.”
